Keperra Club golfers heading to the Special Olympics National Games

Three Members of the Keperra Country Golf Club will be heading to Launceston in Tasmania in a few months to compete in the Special Olympics Australia National Games for athletes with intellectual disability.

Dylan Price, Stephen Lawley and Jiho Park are among the 20 golfers who were selected to represent Queensland at the Games after the State tournament held at Keperra in March last year.

The three golfers are part of the Special Olympics Brisbane Falcons Club and they will be joined in Tasmania by two of their fellow golfing Falcons, Christian Hauser and Ashley George, who also qualified for Team Queensland.

Golf is one of the 15 sports athletes will compete in at the National Games, which run from 17 to 21 October. Dylan, Stephen, Christian and Ashley were selected to play in 9-hole divisions while Jiho will compete over 18 holes.

On Sunday (10 July) the five golfers got a valuable competitive hit-out ahead of the National Games when Keperra, as the home course for the Brisbane Falcons Club, hosted an inter-club tournament for the six South-East Queensland Special Olympics clubs.

All five golfers performed well, with Christian and Jiho finishing first and second respectively in the 18-hole Division 2 competition, Ashley and Dylan placing second and third in the 9-hole Division 1 and Stephen second in 9-hole Division 2.

Team Queensland Special Olympics athletes are currently raising funds to help subsidise the cost of taking part in the National Games for themselves and their necessary support personnel.

The cost for golfers is about $3300 each. The Keperra Club membership has contributed $300 to each of the Club’s Members and the Club has donated prizes for a Brisbane Falcons raffle with tickets available at the Club’s Pro Shop. First prize is a round of golf for three people and lunch with Brisbane Broncos and Queensland State of Origin rugby league legend Petero Civoniceva, and second prize is a Titleist golf bag. The raffle will be drawn on 15 August.
